GIOVANNI VI di DRASKHANAKERT. – Celebrated katholikós of the Armenian Church, from 898 to 925. He governed the see with great wisdom during a period of severe persecutions at the hands of the Arab rulers. He witnessed the martyrdom of King Sembat Bagratuni, and of numerous other Armenian princes and faithful. G. himself, taken prisoner twice and tortured, managed to escape. He wrote a history of Armenia, a valuable and interesting work, particularly in the se-
cond part, where, as an eyewitness, he describes the events of his own time.
