GISELHER of SLATHEIM. - Dominican mystic of the 14th century. A native of Slatheim or Scholtheim to the northwest of Erfurt, G. was a lector at Cologne and Erfurt, distinguished for his learning, priestly zeal, and stylistic expression. Between 1323 and 1337 he compiled a German collection of sermons on the Sunday Gospels, parts of which were printed.
G. emphasizes the birth of the Word; he refers to preachers who had spoken in the same milieu on mystical themes and future glorification; he refutes theses of the Franciscans. He supplied the layman Hermann of Fritzlar with the substance of saints' lives according to the liturgical cycle for the latter's legend.
