GISLER, ANTON. — Bishop and theologian, born in Bürglen (canton of Uri) on 25 March 1863, died in Chur on 4 January 1932. He studied philosophy and theology in Rome. After several years of pastoral ministry in the canton of Uri, in 1893 he joined the Seminary of Chur as professor of dogmatic theology and homiletics; in 1928 he was consecrated coadjutor bishop (titular of Milene) cum iure successionis, and exercised his activity in every field of religious life.
As a theologian, he was a Thomist (a disciple of Billot) and rigorously opposed to modernism. Principal works: Kommissar G., Erinnerungen (Altdorf 1899); Dogmatik (3 vols.) and Homiletik, printed as manuscripts; Modernismus (Einsiedeln 1912); In Christi Heimat (Immensee 1926). G. was the founder (1900) and editor of the Schweizerische Rundschau.
