GISLER, ANTON. - Bishop and theologian, b. at Bürglen (canton of Uri) on 25 March 1863, d. at Chur on 4 January 1932. He studied philosophy and theology in Rome. After a few years of pastoral work in the canton of Uri, in 1893 he moved to the Seminary of Chur as professor of dogmatics and homiletics; in 1928 he was consecrated as coadjutor bishop (titular of Milene) with the right of succession, and he carried out his activity in all fields of religious life.
As a theologian he was a Thomist (a disciple of Billot) and rigorously opposed to Modernism. Principal works: Kommissar G., Erinnerungen (Altdorf 1899); Dogmatik (3 vols.); and Homiletik, printed as manuscripts; Modernismus (Einsiedeln 1912); In Christi Heimat (Immense 1926). G. was the founder (1900) and editor of the Schweizerische Rundschau.
