Gisler, Anton

GISLER, ANTON. - Bishop and theologian, b. at Bürglen (canton of Uri) on 25 March 1863, d. at Chur on 4 Jan. 1932. He studied philosophy and theology in Rome. After a few years of pastoral life in the canton of Uri, he moved in 1893 to the Seminary of Chur as professor of dogmatics and homiletics; in 1928, consecrated coadjutor bishop (titular of Milene) cum iure successionis, he carried out his activity in every field of religious life.

As a theologian he was a Thomist (a disciple of Billot) and rigorously opposed to modernism. Principal works: Kommissar G., Erinnerungen (Altdorf 1899); Dogmatik (3 vols.) and Homiletik, printed as a manuscript; Modernismus (Einsiedeln 1912); In Christi Heimat (Immensee 1926). G. was the founder (1900) and editor of the Schweizerische Rundschau.
