GODESCALC of LIMBURG. - German poet and theologian, b. between 1010 and 1020, d. 24 Nov. 1098. He was a Benedictine in the monasteries of Limburg on the Haardt and of Klingenmünster in the Palatinate; later he became court chaplain to Emperor Henry IV of Franconia and prior of the Liebfrauenkirche in Aquignana.
He wrote poetry in the form of unrhymed sequences; he compiled the *Sermones de beata Maria Virgine* and *De ss. martyribus Irenaeo et Abundio* (patrons of the Limburg convent) and an *Opusculum de S. Cruce*. Important is the doubt he raised regarding the bodily Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which provoked strong opposition.
His works were edited by G. M. Dreves, *Gott-schalk, Münch von Limburg*, Leipzig 1897.
