GODESCALCO di LIMBURG. – German poet and theologian, b. between 1010 and 1020, d. 24 November 1098. He was a Benedictine in the monastery of Limburg on Mount Haardt and in that of Klingenmünster in the Palatinate; later he became court chaplain to the emperor Henry IV of Franconia and prior of the Liebfrauenkirche in Aachen.
He wrote poems in the form of sequences without rhyme; he compiled Sermones de beata Maria Virgine and De ss. martyribus Irenaeo et Abundio (patrons of the Limburg convent), as well as an Opusculum de S. Cruce. Important is the doubt he raised concerning the bodily Assumption of the Madonna, which provoked vigorous opposition.
His works were edited by G. M. Dreves, Gottschalk, Münch von Limburg, Leipzig 1897.
