Gondi, Antonio

GONDI, ANTONIO. - Florentine, of the family from which Cardinal de Retz (v.) came, died on 18 September 1591. A man of great piety, friend and benefactor of the poor who are ashamed to beg and of pious institutions, for 37 years procurator general of the Dominican monastery of St. Vincent in Prato, he was the beloved disciple of St. Catherine de' Ricci.

The Saint wrote him numerous letters, but only a few and minor ones remain. Instead there is an abundance of mentions and references, interpolated in the letters written to other spiritual sons, sufficient to convey the maternal tenderness with which he was surrounded. In her esteem the Saint did not hesitate to place him on a par with St. John, the beloved disciple of Jesus.
