GREGORIO, ANTIPOPE. - Elected by the faction of the Crescenzi upon the death of Sergio IV (d. 12 May 1012), in opposition to l'eofilatto of the counts of Tuscolo, candidate of the Tuscolan faction, who, elected by the majority, took the name Benedetto VIII. After some skirmishes, G., expelled from Rome, went to King Enrico II, whom he met at Pöhle in Saxony on Christmas Day. The king treated him with deference and promised to settle the question, «secundum morem romanum», as Tietmaro writes, on his next journey to Rome. Meanwhile G. was invited to lay aside the pontifical insignia, after which all trace of him is lost.
