GREGORY V, Pope (996-99). - Bruno of Carinthia was the first German pope in the Middle Ages. B. in 972, son of Duke Otto of Carinthia, he was educated by Bishop Willigis of Worms, and became court chaplain. At the request of a Roman legation he was appointed pope by the emperor Otto III as the successor of John XV and was well received by the Roman clergy and people, on account of his excellent character and unblemished morals. G. V crowned Otto III emperor. Toward the end of 996 he was expelled from Rome through a new rebellion of John Crescentius II, who, although he had shortly before been pardoned by the Emperor through the Pope's mediation, with clandestine aid from the Byzantines created the ambitious antipope John XVI. V was brought back to Rome by Otto III with the support of military forces. In the ecclesiastical dispute of Reims, G. V intervened successfully on behalf of the rights of Arnulf, but afterwards he gave Gerbert (later Pope Sylvester II) the archbishopric of Ravenna and the pallium. Against King Robert II of France he energetically defended the Church's marriage laws. G. V died, too soon, of malaria. The epitaph, in the Vatican Grottoes, praises his charitable activity and his zeal, and recalls how he preached in three languages.
