GUIDO DA CORTONA, blessed - Bust - Cortona, Cathedral.

GUIDO da CORTONA, beato. - Born in Cortona of a noble family ca. 1187, died there on June 12, 1247. He was admitted into the Franciscan Order by St. Francis himself during his first preaching at Cortona in 1211; he later withdrew to the solitary Convent of the Celle, near that same city, of which he may rightly be considered the founder. Ordained a priest, he devoted himself to the ministry of preaching at the designation of the seraphic patriarch himself. After his death he worked numerous miracles. His cult was approved by Gregory XIII in 1583 for the diocese of Cortona and extended by Innocent XII to the Franciscan Order.
