HAMON, AUGUSTE. - Jesuit, writer on asceticism, b. at St-Père-en-Retz (Loire-Inférieure) on 2 Jan. 1860, d. in Paris on 26 June 1939. Professor of letters at the College of St. Ignatius in Paris (1896-1899), he remained there as a writer until 1908, when he was appointed a contributor to the periodical Etudes. He was at the same time rector, on two occasions, of the house of Rouen (1908-16 and 1931-35). He spent his last years in Paris.

Besides a substantial contribution to various periodicals, especially to Etudes, to Revue d'ascétique et de mystique and to several works on asceticism, he left: Un maître de la vie mystique. Le p. René de Maumigny (2nd ed., Paris 1921); Les Auxiliaires du Purgatoire (2 vols., ibid. 1919-21); but above all his name is linked to the well-documented volumes of the: Histoire de la dévotion au Sacré-Coeur:
