HAMON, AUGUSTE. - Jesuit, writer on asceticism, b. at St-Père-en-Retz (Loire-Inférieure) on 2 Jan. 1860, d. at Paris on 26 June 1939. Professor of literature at the College of S. Ignazio in Paris (1896-99), he remained there as a writer until 1908, when he was appointed contributor to the periodical Etudes. At the same time he was rector, on two occasions, of the house at Rouen (1908-16 and 1931-35). He spent his last years in Paris.
Besides extensive contributions to various periodicals, especially to Etudes, to the Revue d'ascétique et de mystique, and several works on asceticism, he left: Un maître de la vie mystique. Le p. René de Maumigny (2e ed., Paris 1921); Les Auxiliaires du Purgatoire (2 vols., ibid. 1919-21); but above all his name is associated with the well-documented volumes of the Histoire de la dévotion au Sacré-Coeur:
