HARRIS, JAMES RENDEL. – English archaeologist, b. at Plymouth in 1852, d. at Birmingham on 1 March 1941. From 1882 to 1892 he was professor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Around 1890 he discovered biblical fragments in Sinai, including one from the Epistle to the Corinthians; he subsequently moved to Haverford College; he taught at Cambridge, at Woodbrooke near Birmingham, and from 1918 was curator of the manuscripts at the Ryland Library in Manchester. During a later journey to Sinai he acquired a collection of Greek papyri from Birmingham, which were studied and published by J. Enoch Powell (The R. H. Papyri, Cambridge 1936). Among his works, mention should be made of Biblical fragments from mount Sinai and The Diatessaron of Tasian (Cambridge 1890).
