Around 1890 he found in Sinai biblical fragments, including one from the Epistle to the Corinthians; he then moved to Haverford College; he taught at Cambridge, at Woodbrooke near Birmingham, and from 1918 was curator of manuscripts at the Ryland Library in Manchester. During a new trip to Sinai he acquired a collection of Greek papyri from Birmingham, which were studied and published by J. Enoch Powell (*The R. H. Papyri*, Cambridge 1936). Among his works are to be noted *Biblical fragments from mount Sinai* and *The Diatessaron of Tasian* (Cambridge 1890).
