Harris, James Rendel

HARRIS, JAMES RENDEL. - English archaeologist, b. at Plymouth in 1852, d. at Birmingham on 1 March 1941. From 1882 to 1892 he was a professor at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Around 1890 he found biblical fragments in Sinai, among them one from the Epistle to the Corinthians; he then moved to Haverford College; he taught at Cambridge, at Woodbrooke near Birmingham, and from 1918 he was curator of manuscripts at the Rylands Library in Manchester. During a new journey to Sinai he acquired a collection of Greek papyri from Birmingham, which were studied and published by J. Enoch Powell (The R. H. Papyri, Cambridge 1936). Among his works, mention should be made of the Biblical fragments from mount Sinai, and The Diatessaron of Tatian (Cambridge 1890).
