HARTMANNUS OF SAINT GALL. - Benedictine, master in the abbey of St. Gall, of which he became abbot in 924. He was a disciple of Notker Balbulus and is remembered in the chronicle Casus S. Galli by Ekkehard IV, who calls him «praeter sapientiae doctrinalem dotem, religionis tenacissimus» (MGH, Scriptores, II, p. 102, 5).
About fifteen ecclesiastical hymns in various meters and in the Latin language survive from him, among which a poem in honor of Christ, in Sapphic stanzas, is of value. Brief verses greet the coming to St. Gall of Kings Conrad and Charles III.
His namesake was a monk of the same abbey who, toward the end of the 10th century or at the beginning of the 11th, following the example of Ekkehard I, also wrote, likewise in Latin, a life of St. Wiborada, a religious woman who had suffered martyrdom in the vicinity of St. Gall during an invasion of the Hungarians in 925. This composition is judged by Conrad of Fabaria, continuator of the Casus S. Galli, to be «luculento satis sermone» (MGH, Scriptores, II, p. 166). To it must be added an epitaph in honor of the Saint, perhaps later.
