MAFFEI, ANDREA. - Poet and translator, b. at Molina in Val di Ledro (Trentino) on 19 Apr. 1798, d. at Milan on 27 Nov. 1885. He perfected his knowledge of the German language at Munich, where he was taken by a paternal uncle of his, the abbot Giuseppe, author of a Storia della letteratura italiana.
With his numerous versions of the major foreign poets, from Gessner to Schiller, from Goethe to Milton and Byron, he contributed to their diffusion in nineteenth-century Italian culture, striving to render them in expression as, had they "by chance been born Italians, they would have signified their thoughts." In collaboration with Monti he translated passages from Pirker's Tunisiade and Klopstock's Messiade. His lyrics possess a romantic composure of affections, from which a sense of gentle melancholy is not to be separated. He was the husband of Countess Clara Carrara Spinelli, in whose Milanese salon the best-known artists and men of letters of the time gathered.
