MALMIGNATI, GIULIO. - Man of letters and politician, b. at Lendinara, of a noble family, toward the end of the 16th century, d. ca. the middle of the 17th century.

An imitator of Tasso, he composed a heroic poem dedicated to Louis XIII, the Enrico ovvero Francia conquistata, which deals with the events that took place during the period of the religious wars in France, from the death of Henry III to the conversion of Henry IV. The plot is somewhat intricate, but the supernatural element of divine visions and heavenly aid, by which the protagonist is assisted in his every action, acquires particular importance in it. Perhaps, though the question is disputed, some episodes of the poem served Voltaire as a starting point for the composition of his Henriade. Moreover M. was the author of two tragedies: the Ordaura, set in a fabulous Orient, and the Clorindo, of the pastoral genre.
