Hauptmann, Moritz

HAUPTMANN, MORITZ. - Theorist and composer, b. in Dresden on 13 Oct. 1792, d. in Leipzig on 3 Jan. 1868. After deep and careful studies he entered the court chapel in Dresden in 1812 as a violinist; he was then in Vienna, St. Petersburg, Kassel, and in 1842 he settled in Leipzig, where he was organist at the church of St. Thomas and teacher of harmony and counterpoint at the Conservatory.

He wrote vocal music of a secular nature, masses, hymns, psalms and motets, sonatas for violin and organ. He also published numerous theoretical studies, such as Die Natur der Harmonik und Metrik (Leipzig 1853), Die Lehre von der Harmonik (ibid. 1860), Erläuterung zu J. S. Bach Kunst der Fuge (2nd ed., ibid. 1861). He was a co-founder and president for his whole life of the Bach Society and oversaw the printing of the first three volumes of the complete collection of its works.
