HAUREAU, BARTHÉLEMY. — Historian and man of letters, born in Paris on 8 November 1812, died there on 29 April 1896. He moved from journalism to scholarly research, successfully promoting literary and philosophical studies of medieval authors. From 1848 he was librarian of the manuscript section of the Bibliothèque nationale; from 1862 a member of the «Académie des inscriptions et belles lettres».
He made a valuable contribution to the Histoire littéraire de la France in vols. XX–XXXII (Paris 1869–96), with important information on medieval theologians, philosophers, canonists, and grammarians; and with many articles in the Journal des savants, in vols. XX–XXXVI (1855–96); noteworthy are the Notices et extraits des manuscrits latins de la Bibliothèque nationale (6 vols., Paris 1890–93); and vols. XIV–XVI of the Gallia christiana (v. there 1856–65). He also wrote: Histoire littéraire du Maine (4 vols., there 1843–52; 2nd ed., 10 vols., there 1870–77); De la philosophie scolastique (there 1850); Histoire de la philosophie scolastique (3 vols., there 1872–80); Notices sur les Mélanges poétiques de Hildebert de Lavardin (there 1882); Les oeuvres de Hugues de St-Victor (there 1886).
