BARTHÉLEMY HAUREAU. — Historian and man of letters, born in Paris on 8 Nov. 1812, died there on 29 Apr. 1896. He moved from journalism to scholarly research, successfully promoting literary and philosophical studies on medieval authors. From 1848 he was librarian of the manuscripts section of the National Library; from 1862 a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres.
He contributed effectively to the Histoire littéraire de la France in vols. XXV–XXXII (Paris 1869–96) with valuable information on medieval theologians, philosophers, canonists and grammarians; and with many articles to the Journal des savants, in vols. XX–XXVI (1855–96). Notable are his Notices et extraits des manuscrits latins de la Bibliothèque nationale (6 vols., Paris 1890–93) and vols. XIV–XVI of the Gallia Christiana (q.v.; ibid. 1856–65). He also wrote: Histoire littéraire du Maine (4 vols., ibid. 1843–52; 2nd ed., 10 vols., ibid. 1870–77); De la philosophie scolastique (ibid. 1850); Histoire de la philosophie scolastique (3 vols., ibid. 1872–80); Notices sur les Mélanges poétiques de Hildebert de Lavardin (ibid. 1882); Les œuvres de Hugues de St-Victor (ibid. 1886).
