HAZE, MARIE-THÉRÈSE. - Foundress of the Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross for the education of the children of the people, b. at Liegi on 27 Feb. 1782, d. there on 7 Jan. 1876. The French Revolution compelled her parents, who were well-to-do, to go into exile and to lose their property.
Endowed with a lively intelligence, from her youth she desired to devote herself to the good of the young, distinguishing herself by profound piety and dedication to works of religion. She then resolved to concern herself solely with the poor. Having overcome no slight difficulties, in 1844 she founded her Congregation, to which she soon added the care of the sick and of female prisoners in hospitals, orphanages, and refuges for wayward young women. During her forty-two years of leadership she was able to see her Institute spread through Belgium, Germany, England, and the Indies.
The cause of her beatification has been introduced before the S. Congregazione dei Riti.
