HAZAEL (Heb. Ḥāzā'el and Ḥāzā'el, "God sees"; Akkadian, ḥaza'ilu; Septuagint, A'āyā). - Fierce king of the Arameans of Damascus (ca. 844-797), appointed by Yahweh to punish the idolatry of Israel (1 Kings 19:15-17). Sent by the ailing Ben-hadad II to consult Elisha, H., to his unpleasant surprise, found his plan to kill the King revealed to him, along with the announcement of the great evil he would do to Israel (2 Kings 8:7-15). Having killed Ben-hadad, he usurped the Kingdom; H. is therefore called by the Assyrians: "son of nobody" (A. Pohl [v. bibl.], pp. 71, 10°).
A skilled and energetic commander, he managed to survive, albeit with heavy losses, the campaigns (842, 839) conducted against him by Shalmaneser III (Obelisk, lines 97-104); and no longer molested, he turned against Israel. He had already defended Ramoth-gilead, wounding Joram (842; 2 Kings 8:28 ff.; 9:14 ff.); now, while Jehu reigned, he defeated the Israelites everywhere, occupied all of Transjordan as far as the Arnon (2 Kings 10:32 ff.; Am. 1:3 ff.); he dominated Israel: he left Jehoahaz a garrison of 10,000 foot soldiers, 50 horsemen and 10 chariots (2 Kings 13:3-22). In the south, he took Gath (798), attacked Jerusalem and withdrew for the huge sum paid by Joash (2 Kings 12:18 ff.).
