Jehu is anointed king of Israel, to destroy the house of Achab and Jezebel. He killeth Joram king of Israel, and Ochozias king of Juda. Jezebel is eaten by dogs.
Iehu is anointed king of Israel, 7. to destroy the house of Athab and Iezabel. 14. He presently killeth Ioram king of Israel, 27. Likewise Ochozias king of Iuda. 30. also Iezabel, who is eaten by dogges.
1And Eliseus the prophet, called one of the sons of the prophets, and said to him: Gird up thy loins, and take this little bottle of oil in thy hand, and go to Ramoth Galaad. AND Eliseus the prophete called one of the children of the prophetes, and sayd to him: Girde thy loynes, and take this litle boxe of oyle in thy hand, and goe into Ramoth Galaad. 2And when thou art come thither, thou shalt see Jehu the son of Josaphat the son of Namsi: and going in, thou shalt make him rise up from amongst his brethren, and carry him into an inner chamber.E giunto colà, vedrai Jehu figliuolo di Josaphat, figliuolo di Namsi, e appressandoti a lui. And when thou shalt come thither, thou shalt see Iehu the sonne of Iosaphat the sonne of Namsi: and going in thou shalt rayse him out of the middes of his brethren, and shalt bring him into an innter chamber.Cumque veneris illuc, videbis Jehu filium Josaphat filii Namsi: et ingressus suscitabis eum de medio fratrum suorum, et introduces in interius cubiculum. 3Then taking the little bottle of oil, thou shalt pour it on his head, and shalt say: Thus saith the Lord: I have anointed thee king over Israel. And thou shalt open the door and flee, and shalt not stay there.E presa l'ampolla dell'olio, la verserai sul capo di lui, dicendo: Queste cose dice il Signore: Io ti ho unto in re d'Israele. And holding the litle boxe of oyle, thou shalt powre vpon his head, and shalt say: Thus sayth our Lord: I haue anoynted thee king ouer Israel. And thou shalt open the doore, and flee, and shalt not stay there. 4So the young man, the servant of the prophet, went away to Ramoth Galaad,Il giovine adunque ministro del profeta andò a Ramoth di Galaad,The yongman therfore the childe of a prophete went into Ramoth Galaad,Abiit ergo adolescens puer prophetæ in Ramoth Galaad, 5And went in thither: and behold, the captains of the army were sitting, and he said: I have a word to thee, O prince. And Jehu said: Unto whom of us all? And he said: To thee, O prince.E quando ei giunse colà, vide come i principi dell'esercito erano assisi, e disse: Ho da dire una parola a te, o principe. E Jehu disse: A chi di tutti noi? E quegli rispose: A te, o principe.and entered in thither: and behold the captaynes of the armie sate, and he sayd: I haue a word to thee o prince: And Iehu sayd: to whom of vs al? But he sayd: To thee o prince.et ingressus est illuc: ecce autem principes exercitus sedebant: et ait: Verbum mihi ad te, o princeps. Dixitque Jehu: Ad quem ex omnibus nobis ? At ille dixit: Ad te, o princeps.
6And he arose, and went into the chamber: and he poured the oil upon his head, and said: Thus saith the Lord God of Israel: I have anointed thee king over Israel, the people of the Lord. And he arose, and went into the chamber: but he powred oyle vpon his head, and sayd: Thus sayth our Lord the God of Israel: I haue anoynted thee king ouer the people of the Lord of Israel,Et surrexit, et ingressus est cubiculum: at ille fudit oleum super caput ejus, et ait: Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël: Unxi te regem super populum Domini Israël, 7And thou shalt cut off the house of Achab, thy master, and I will revenge the blood of my servants, the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, at the hand of Jezabel.E sterminerai la casa di Achab tuo signore, e io farò vendetta del sangue de' profeti miei servi, e del sangue di tutti i servi del Signore sopra Jezabele.and thou shalt strike the house of Achab thy maister, and I wil reuenge the bloud of my seruantes the prophetes, and the bloud of al the seruantes of the Lord of the hand of Iezabelet percuties domum Achab domini tui, et ulciscar sanguinem servorum meorum prophetarum, et sanguinem omnium servorum Domini de manu Jezabel. 8And I will destroy all the house of Achab, and I will cut off from Achab, him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up, and the meanest in Israel.E distruggerò tutta la casa di Achab, e ucciderò fino i cani della casa di Achab, e i rinchiusi, e gli ultimi d'Israele. And I wil destroy al the house of Achab, and wil kil of Achab him that pisseth agaynst a wal, and the shut vp, and the meanest in Israel. 9And I will make the house of Achab, like the house of Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, and like the house of Baasa, the son of Ahias.E farò della casa di Achab, come della casa di Geroboam figliuolo di Nabath, e come della casa di Baasa figliuolo di Ahia. And I wil make the house of Achab, as the house of Ieroboam the sonne of Nabat, and as the house of Baasa the sonne of Ahias.Et dabo domum Achab sicut domum Jeroboam filii Nabat, et sicut domum Baasa filii Ahia.
10And the dogs shall eat Jezabel, in the field of Jezrahel, and there shall be no one to bury her. And he opened the door and fled.E la stessa Jezabele sarà divorata dai cani nella campagna di Jezrael, e non avrà chi le dia sepoltura. Indi egli aperse la porta, e fuggì.Iezabel also the dogges shal eate in the field of Iezrahel, neither shal there be anie to burie her. And he opened the doore, and fled. 11Then Jehu went forth to the servants of his lord: and they said to him: Are all things well? why came this madman to thee? And he said to them: You know the man, and what he said.E Jehu andò dov' erano i servi del suo signore, i quali gli dissero: Va bene ogni cosa? A qual fine è venuto quel pazzo a trovarti? Egli disse loro: Voi conoscete l'uomo, e i suoi discorsi. And Iehu went forth to his maisters seruantes. Who said to him: Are al thinges wel? Why came this madde man to thee? Who sayd to them: You know the man, and what he spake. 12But they answered: It is false; but rather do thou tell us. And he said to them: Thus and thus did he speak to me: and he said: Thus saith the Lord: I have anointed thee king over Israel. But they answered: It is false, but rather doe thou tel vs. Who sayd to them: Thus and thus he spake to me: and he sayd: Thus sayth our Lord, I haue anoynted thee king ouer Israel. At ille responderunt: Falsum est, sed magis narra nobis. 13Then they made haste, and taking every man his garment, laid it under his feet, after the manner of a judgment seat, and they sounded the trumpet, and said: Jehu is king.Si alzarono quegli in fretta, e prendendo ciascun di essi il proprio mantello li posero sotto a' piedi di lui, facendo come un tribunale, e sonaron la tromba, e dissero: Jehu è fatto re.They therfore made hast, and euerie man taking his mantel layd it vnder his feete, after the similitude of a iudgement seate, & they sounded the trumpet, and sayd: Iehu hath the kingdom.Festinaverunt itaque, et unusquisque tollens pallium suum posuerunt sub pedibus ejus in similitudinem tribunalis, et cecinerunt tuba, atque dixerunt: Regnavit Jehu.
14So Jehu, the son of Josaphat, the son of Namsi, conspired against Joram. Now Joram had besieged Ramoth Galaad, he, and all Israel, fighting with Hazael, king of Syria:Jehu pertanto figliuolo di Josaphat, figliuolo di Namsi, fece congiura contro Joram. Iehu therfore the sonne of Iosaphat the sonne of Namsi conspired agaynst Ioram: Moreouer Ioram had besieged Ramoth Galaad, he, and al Israel agaynst Hazael the king of Syria:Conjuravit ergo Jehu filius Josaphat filii Namsi contra Joram: porro Joram obsederat Ramoth Galaad, ipse et omnis Israël contra Hazaël regem Syriæ: 15And was returned to be healed in Jezrahel of his wounds; for the Syrians had wounded him, when he fought with Hazael, king of Syria. And Jehu said: If it please you, let no man go forth or flee out of the city, lest he go, and tell in Jezrahel. Or Jehu disse Se così vi piace, nissuno esca, o si fugga dalla città, affinchè non vada a portar la nuova a Jezrael.and was returned to be cuted in Iezrael of the woundes, for the Syrians had wounded him, fighting against Hazael the king of Syria. And Iehu sayd: If it please you, let no man goe forth fugitiue out of the citie, lest he goe, and tel in Iezrahel.et reversus fuerat ut curaretur in Jezrahel propter vulnera, quia percusserant eum Syri præliantem contra Hazaël regem Syriæ. 16And he got up, and went into Jezrahel for Joram was sick there, and Ochozias king of Juda, was come down to visit Joram.E si mosse egli, e andò verso Jezrael: perocché ivi si trovava Joram ammalato, e Ochozia re di Giuda era andato per visitare Joram. And he mounted, and went into Iezrahel: for Ioram was sicke there, and Ochozias the king of Iuda was come downe to visite Ioram. 17The watchman therefore, that stood upon the tower of Jezrahel, saw the troop of Jehu coming, and said: I see a troop. And Joram said: Take a chariot, and send to meet them, and let him that goeth say: Is all well? The watchman therfore, that stood vpon the toure of Iezrahel, saw the troupe of Iehu coming, & said: I see a troupe. And Ioram said: Take a Chariote, and send to meete them, and let him that goeth say: Are al thinges wel?
18So there went one in a chariot to meet him, and said: Thus saith the king: Are all things peaceable? And Jehu said: What hast thou to do with peace? go behind and follow me. And the watchman told, saying: The messenger came to them, but he returneth not. E Jehu disse: Che importa a te della pace? passa, e vieni dietro a me. He went therfore, that was gotten vp into the chariote, to meete him, and sayd: Thus saith the king: Are al thinges peaceable? And Iehu sayd: What hast thou to doe with peace? passe, and folow me. The watchman also told, saying: The messenger came to them, & returneth not. 19And he sent a second chariot of horses: and he came to them, and said: Thus saith the king: Is there peace? And Jehu said: What hast thou to do with peace? pass, and follow me.E (Joram) mandò anche il secondo cocchio, e il messo arrivò presso a coloro, e disse: Il re ha detto: Abbiam noi pace? He sent also the second chariote of horses: and he came to them, and said: Thus sayth the king: Is there peace? And Iehu sayd: What hast thou to doe with peace? passe, and folow me.Misit etiam currum equorum secundum: venitque ad eos, et ait: Hæc dicit rex: Numquid pax est ? Et ait Jehu: Quid tibi et paci ? transi, et sequere me. 20And the watchman told, saying: He came even to them, but returneth not: and the driving is like the driving of Jehu, the son of Namsi; for he drives furiously.E la sentinella diede avviso, e disse: (Il messo) è arrivato, dove son coloro, ma egli non torna: or colui, che viene in qua sembra all'andatura Jehu figliuolo di Namsi; perocché cammina a precipizio. And the watchman told, saying: He is come as far as they, & returneth not: and it is the pace as it were the pace of Iehu the sonne of Namsi, for he goeth amayne. 21And Joram said: Make ready the chariot. And they made ready his chariot: and Joram, king of Israel, and Ochozias, king of Juda, went out, each in his chariot, and they went out to meet Jehu, and met him in the field of Naboth, the Jezrahelite.E Joram disse: Si ammannisca il cocchio. And Ioram sayd: Make readie the chariote. And they made readie his chariote, and Ioram the king of Israel went forth, and Ochozias the king of Iuda, ech in their chariotes, and they went forth to meete Iehu, and found him in the field of Naboth the Iezrahelite.
22And when Joram saw Jehu, he said: Is there peace, Jehu? And he answered: What peace? so long as the fornications of Jezabel, thy mother, and her many sorceries, are in their vigour.E Joram appena vide Jehu, disse: Jehu, abbiam noi pace? And when Ioram had seene Iehu, he sayd: Is there peace Iehu? But he answered: What peace? The fornications of Iezabel thy mother, and her manie sorceries are in their vigour.Cumque vidisset Joram Jehu, dixit: Pax est, Jehu ? At ille respondit: Quæ pax ? adhuc fornicationes Jezabel matris tuæ, et veneficia ejus multa, vigent. 23And Joram turned his hand, and fleeing, said to Ochozias: There is treachery, Ochozias.E Joram voltò indietro, e fuggendo disse ad Ochozia: Tradimenti, o Ochozia. And Ioram turned his hand, and fleing sayd to Ochozias: Treason Ochozias. 24But Jehu bent his bow with his hand, and shot Joram between the shoulders: and the arrow went out through his heart, and immediately he fell in his chariot. Moreouer Iehu bent his bow with his hand, and stroke Ioram betwen the shoulders: and the arrow went out through his hart, and immediatly he fel in his chariote. 25And Jehu said to Badacer, his captain: Take him, and cast him into the field of Naboth, the Jezrahelite: for I remember, when I and thou, sitting in a chariot, followed Achab, this man’s father, that the Lord laid this burden upon him, saying:E Jehu disse a Badacer capitano: Prendilo, e gettalo nel campo di Naboth Jezraelita; perocché mi ricordo, che quando io, e tu sedendo nel cocchio andavamo dietro ad Achab padre di costui, il Signore pronuncio contro di lui questa sentenza, dicendo:And Iehu sayd to captaine Badacer: Take him, throwe him forth in the field of Naboth the Iezrahelite: for I remember when I and thou sitting in a chariote did folow Achab this mans father, that our Lord lifted vp this burden vpon him, saying:Dixitque Jehu ad Badacer ducem: Tolle, projice eum in agro Naboth Jezrahelitæ: memini enim quando ego et tu sedentes in curru sequebamur Achab patrem hujus, quod Dominus onus hoc levaverit super eum, dicens:
26If I do not requite thee in this field, saith the Lord, for the blood of Naboth, and for the blood of his children, which I saw yesterday, saith the Lord. So now take him, and cast him into the field, according to the word of the Lord. If not for the bloud of Naboth, and for the bloud of his children, which I saw yesterday, sayth our Lord, I require thee not in this field sayth our Lord. Now therfore take him, and throw him into the field according to the word of our Lord. 27But Ochozias, king of Juda, seeing this, fled by the way of the garden house: and Jehu pursued him, and said: Strike him also in his chariot. And they struck him in the going up to Gaver, which is by Jeblaam: and he fled into Mageddo, and died there. But Ochozias the king of Iuda seing this, fled by the way of the house of the garden: and Iehu pursewed him, and said: This man also strike ye in his chariote. And they stroke him in the going vp of Ganer, which is beside Ieblaam: who fled into Mageddo, and died there. 28And his servants laid him upon his chariot, and carried him to Jerusalem: and they buried him in his sepulchre with his fathers, in the city of David.E i suoi servi lo posero sul suo cocchio, e lo portarono a Gerusalemme, e lo seppellirono nel sepolcro de' padri suoi nella città di Davidde. And his seruantes layd him vpon his chariote, and caried him into Ierusalem: and they buried him there in his sepulchre with his fathers in the Citie of Dauid.Et imposuerunt eum servi ejus super currum suum, et tulerunt in Jerusalem: sepelieruntque eum in sepulchro cum patribus suis in civitate David. 29In the eleventh year of Joram, the son of Achab, Ochozias reigned over Juda;L'anno undecimo di Joram figliuolo di Achab, regnò Ochozia sopra Giuda. In the eleuenth yeare of Ioram the sonne of Achab, reigned Ochozias ouer Iuda,Anno undecimo Joram filii Achab, regnavit Ochozias super Judam,
30And Jehu came into Jezrahel. But Jezabel, hearing of his coming in, painted her face with stibic stone, and adorned her head, and looked out of a window.E Jehu andò a Jezrael. Moreouer Iezabel hearing of his entrance, paynted her face with stibicke stone, and decked her head, and beheld through the windowvenitque Jehu in Jezrahel. Porro Jezabel, introitu ejus audito, depinxit oculos suos stibio, et ornavit caput suum, et respexit per fenestram 31At Jehu coming in at the gate, and said: Can there be peace for Zambri, that hath killed his master? Iehu coming at the gate, and sayd: Can there be peace to Zambri, that killed his maister?ingredientem Jehu per portam, et ait: Numquid pax potest esse Zambri, qui interfecit dominum suum ? 32And Jehu lifted up his face to the window, and said: Who is this? And two or three eunuchs bowed down to him.E Jehu alzò il capo verso la finestra, e disse: Chi è colei? E due, o tre eunuchi s'inchinarono a lui.And Iehu lifted vp his face to the window, and sayd: What is she? And two or three eunuches bowed them selues to him. 33And he said to them: Throw her down headlong; And they threw her down, and the wall was sprinkled with her blood, and the hoofs of the horses trod upon her. But he sayd to them: Cast her downe headlong, & they threw her downe and the wal was sprinkled with the bloud, and the hoofes of the horses trode her. 34And when he was come in to eat, and to drink, he said: Go, and see after that cursed woman, and bury her; because she is a king’s daughter.E quand'egli fu andato in casa per mangiare, e bere, disse; Andate, e abbiate cura di quella sciaurata, e seppellitela; perocché è figliuola di re.And when he was entered in, to eate, and to drinke, he sayd: Goe, and see that cursed woman, and burie her: because she is a kinges daughter.
35And when they went to bury her, they found nothing but the skull, and the feet, and the extremities of her hands.Ed essendo andati quelli per seppellirla, non trovarono se non il cranio, e i piedi, e l'estremità delle mani,And when they went to burie her, they found nothing but the skul, and the feete, and the extreme partes of the handes. 36And coming back they told him. And Jehu said: It is the word of the Lord, which he spoke by his servant Elias, the Thesbite, saying: In the field of Jezrahel the dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezabel.E tornarono a riferir ciò a Jehu, ed egli disse: Questo è quello, che il Signore disse per bocca di Elia Thesbite suo servo, allorché pronunziò: I cani mangeran le carni di Jezabele nel campo di Jezrael:And returning they told him. And Iehu sayd: It is the word of our Lord, which he spake by his seruant Elias the Thesbite, saying: In the field of Iezrahel shal the dogges eate the flesh of Iezabel,Reversique nuntiaverunt ei. Et ait Jehu: Sermo Domini est, quem locutus est per servum suum Eliam Thesbiten, dicens: In agro Jezrahel comedent canes carnes Jezabel, 37And the flesh of Jezabel shall be as dung upon the face of the earth in the field of Jezrahel; so that they who pass by shall say: Is this that same Jezabel?E le carni di Jezabele resteranno come sterco sopra la superficie della terra nel campo di Jezrael, talmente che i passeggieri diranno: E ella costei quella Jezabele?and the flesh of Iezabel shal be as dung vpon the face of the earth in the field of Iezrahel, so that they which passe by shal say: Is this that same Iezabel?et erunt carnes Jezabel sicut stercus super faciem terræ in agro Jezrahel, ita ut prætereuntes dicant: Hæccine est illa Jezabel ?

Furiously. The Chaldean and Arabic say, "he marcheth slowly." But the whole conduct of Jehu was marked with eagerness and severity, like that of Cato of Utica, (Grotius) and the utmost expedition was requisite.

Children. We do not read these words before, or that the children of Naboth were slain; but it is very usual to supply in one place what has been omitted in another, and Achab was not required to make restitution, (Calmet) as there were no heirs probably left. (Menochius) (Worthington)

Stone, or antimony, to make the eyes look black and large. If (Calmet) Jezabel thought that she would thus command respect or love, (Abulensis) she was extremely imprudent and rash, in her present condition. Pride might suggest that she ought not to appear unadorned. (Calmet) (Tirinus)

Master. Being convinced that she could not gain the affections of Jehu, (Haydock) and thinking that he would not lay hands on a woman, (Menochius) she insolently, or in despair, (Haydock) upbraids him as a new Zambri, who might expect a similar fate, 3 Kings xvi. (Calmet)
Tirinus
The name of Zambri was used proverbially to denote an ungrateful rebel; as with us Judas is used for a traitor. (Tirinus)
9:32
This. "Who dares address me with such provoking language?" Hebrew, "Who with me, who?" will punish the wretch? The eunuchs, who had hitherto waited upon Jezabel, immediately shewed their readiness to take part with her enemy: so little dependence can be placed on servants in the hour of adversity, when they have long been witnesses of their masters' crimes.

Her body cannot be recognized. This will be the fate of the greatest mortal beauties, a few days after their departure. St. Francis Borgia durst not take an oath that the corpse which he had to attend, was that of the late beautiful empress Isabella: so much was it already disfigured. This sight was the beginning of his conversion, and of that eminent sanctity to which he attained, by despising all that the world can give or take away. (Haydock)
Haydock
The Spanish interpreters call Achab's widow, Isabella: and she seems to have been the sister, or relation, of Dido, who founded Carthage about this time; (Tirinus) Salien says in the 16th year of Jehu, the year before Christ 887. (Haydock)

Not so the words of Shimei, when he said, “Begone, thou man of blood” ( 2 Sam. xvi. 7 .), and yet he too spake with boldness; but this is not courage, but audacity, and insolence, and an unbridled tongue. Jezebel too reproached Jehu, when she said, “The slayer of his master” (

9:1
1. GO TO RAMOTH GALAAD. For that city had already been captured after the wounding of King Joram who was besieging it, either wholly or in part, says Abulensis, Sanchez and Serarius, and this is evident from verse 15.
9:2
2. THOU SHALT RAISE HIM UP FROM THE MIDST OF HIS BRETHREN, as Vatablus says, command him to rise from the midst of his brethren, that is, of the princes his colleagues; for those who are called brethren are shortly after called princes. THOU SHALT BRING HIM INTO AN INNER CHAMBER, so that you may anoint him king in secret: lest if you do this publicly, sedition be stirred up by the followers and supporters of King Joram, and therefore when you have anointed him in secret, immediately "thou shalt flee, and thou shalt not stay there."
9:6
6. I HAVE ANOINTED THEE. This appears to have been the second anointing of Jehu: for the first appears to have been made by Elias; for God had commanded this to him, III Kings XIX, 15, and therefore had ordered him to go to Damascus, so that he might anoint Hazael there as king of Syria, and then to Samaria, so that he might anoint Jehu as king of Israel: but that first anointing by Elias was preliminary and prognostic of the kingdom; but this second one made by Eliseus was the conferring of the kingdom, and his creation as king. Thus Cajetan, Scholastic History, Sanchez and others.
9:11
11. WHAT COMES THIS MADMAN TO THEE? See here how the idolatrous princes and military men mock the prophet, and call him "mad" and fanatical. For the harsh life of the prophets, their horrible clothing, their prophetic speech seemed to them to be madness, and the prophets seemed to them to be mad; for they were as it were moved in mind, and afflated by a higher divine spirit. Whence Plato in the Phaedo: "Some," he says, "are mad by divine benefit, as prophets and Sibyls," and Cicero, book II of On Divination: "What authority has this frenzy, which you call divine, that the wise man does not see what the mad man sees, and he who has lost human senses has attained divine ones, and that to prophesy is the same as to be mad." "For the animal man perceiveth not the things that are of the Spirit of God," I Corinthians II and III. The same and even more did the prophets of the devil do, who produced uncouth gestures, and seemed to rage: whence of the Sibyl consulted by Aeneas thus sings Virgil, book VI of the Aeneid: Not one her face, not one her colour shows, Not combed her locks in order laid: but heaves Her panting breast, and swells her heart with rage, And grows in stature more than mortal size, When nearer to her comes the breath of God. YOU KNOW THE MAN, AND WHAT HE HAS SPOKEN, that is to say, you know him to be mad, and therefore to have spoken madness, and therefore it is not to be believed, nor to be explained by me. This Jehu says, lest if he should say that he was truly anointed by him as king, he should create danger for himself: namely, lest someone either fighting for Joram, or envying Jehu the kingdom, should attack and kill him. "When they asked," says Josephus, "for what reason the young man had come, and said he seemed mad: Rightly, he said, do you conjecture, for he spoke the words of a madman. But when they asked him more earnestly what it was, he said that the young man had told them that the kingdom of the people had been delivered to him by God."
9:12
12. BUT THEY SAID: IT IS FALSE, BUT RATHER TELL US, that is to say, he has not spoken madness, but serious and weighty matters, and we greatly desire that you explain them to us. Whence the Chaldean translator renders it, you speak falsely, now tell us. They suspected by the instinct of God, that which was the case, namely that Jehu had received an oracle of the kingdom from the prophet, and they strive to extort it from him, whence what follows ensues.
9:13
13. THEY HASTENED THEREFORE, AND EACH ONE TAKING HIS GARMENT (his outer garment) PUT IT UNDER HIS FEET IN THE LIKENESS OF A TRIBUNAL. The Septuagint, upon the ascent of steps; Vatablus, on the summit of the steps, that is on the highest step, namely the highest and most eminent place, that is to say in an exalted place they raised for him with their garments as it were a royal throne, so that he might sit on it as a king: for by this rite they made him king. Namely at the voice of the Prophet, which the princes heard from Jehu, these and the soldiers, divinely stirred up, brought the kingdom to him, and therefore they constructed some steps by tumultuous work, which they covered with their garments as it were with hangings, and placed Jehu on the highest of them, and acclaimed to him: "Jehu has reigned," that is to say, Jehu is our king, let him therefore live and reign prosperously for many years. Thus Plutarch writes of Cato of Utica in his life, that garments were spread by soldiers through those places which he himself was about to tread with his feet: which kind of honor he reports was wont to be paid to Emperors. And in certain sacred rites of their gods, when they would carry them in festive procession, he writes in the same Plutarch in the Alcibiades that garments were wont to be spread. The same he relates of the sacred rites of Juno, book XII, chapter IX of Athenaeus. Thus also to Christ as Messiah the king, entering Jerusalem in solemn procession on Palm Sunday, the crowd spread the way with palms and garments, Matthew XXI.
9:18
18. WHAT HAVE I TO DO WITH PEACE, that is to say, I bring not peace, but war; for I have conspired against your king Joram, that I may kill him and seize his kingdom.
9:21
21. AND JORAM KING OF ISRAEL WENT OUT, AND OCHOZIAS KING OF JUDA, etc., TO MEET JEHU; AND THEY FOUND HIM IN THE FIELD OF NABOTH THE JEZRAHELITE. It was just and fitting this judgment of God, who gathered them in the field of Naboth that they might be slain there, in which Achab their father had despoiled Naboth of his vineyard and killed him, as he himself had foretold to him through Elias, III Kings XXI, 23.
9:22
22. YET THE FORNICATIONS OF JEZABEL THY MOTHER, AND HER MANY SORCERIES REMAIN, namely the idolatry and magic of Jezabel; for idolatry is mystical fornication, by which one, abandoning God the spouse, adheres to idols, as it were to adulterers. Magic is the same, because the priests of idols are magicians; for they consult the demon, and receive oracles from him. Jehu says this, that is to say, I come on the part of God the judge, that I may punish your idolatry and magic, and that of your mother Jezabel.
9:25
25. THAT THE LORD HATH LIFTED UP THIS BURDEN UPON HIM. "Burden" is called the threatening and burdensome prophecy, by which God through Elias had foretold that the descendants of Achab were to be killed on account of his crimes, III Kings XXI, 23.
9:27
27. STRIKE THIS ONE ALSO, according to the destruction of the house of Achab predicted and decreed by God. For Ochozias was king of Juda, on the part of his mother Athalia, grandson of Achab, and he imitated his crimes and idolatry. You will say, II Paralipomenon cap. XXII, 9, it is said that Ochozias fled and hid himself in Samaria? I answer, on this occasion he fled and hid himself in Samaria, but as is added there, he was afterwards discovered in Samaria, led to Jehu in Gaber, and there struck he fled to Mageddo, and there he died. Thus Lyran.
9:29
29. IN THE ELEVENTH YEAR OF JORAM SON OF ACHAB KING OF ISRAEL OCHOZIAS REIGNED OVER JUDA. "Reigned," that is, he began to reign, and he reigned scarcely one year; for in the twelfth year Joram was slain together with him by Jehu.
9:30
30. AND JEZABEL HEARING OF HIS (Jehu the regicide's) ENTRANCE, PAINTED HER EYES WITH STIBIUM, not to entice Jehu into love of her; for she was an old woman, and she knew Jehu to be her sworn enemy, but to display boldness, as one who neither feared nor cared for Jehu; whence she rebuked him and called him the murderer of her lord (King Joram), to strike him down: for she thought that Jehu would not dare to lay hands upon her, as a woman and a queen, nor stain himself in her blood. But if he dared, she wished to die bravely and nobly, as one despising death. This is the vanity of the world and of worldly people, equally as the vanity of women is stibium and purple dye, which therefore Magdalen, when she repented, despised; for as St. Jerome says, epistle to Furia: "She did not have curling headdresses, nor creaking shoes, nor circles darkened with stibium." Whence St. Cyprian, tract. On Works and Almsgiving: "Anoint your eyes, he says, not with diabolical stibium, but with the eye-salve of Christ."
9:31
31. CAN THERE BE PEACE WITH ZAMBRI, WHO SLEW HIS LORD, as if to say, what peace and fellowship can there be with Jehu, who is as it were another Zambri the tyrant. For just as Zambri slew Ela his king, III Kings XVI, 10, and seized his kingdom, so Jehu slew Joram his king, and seizes his kingdom.
9:37
37. AND THE FLESH OF JEZABEL SHALL BE AS DUNG. He alludes to the etymology of the name Jezabel. For Jezabel in Hebrew is the same as אי זבל i zebel, that is, where is dung? For zebel in Chaldean, Syriac and Arabic is the same as dung. Or Jezabel is the same as ויזבל i zebel, that is, island of a dunghill, or woe to the dunghill, says Pagninus, whence some think that from zebel, that is dung, the devil is called by contempt zabulum, that is a dungheap, and the Greeks call Beelzebub Beelzebul, as if God of dung; for the fly zebub sits upon dung. Moreover St. Ambrose, Exhortation to Virgins: "Jezabel, he says, is the same as a flowing forth of vanity, or vain and empty abundance, such as is in avarice, ambition, and every concupiscence, whose idea is Jezabel." IS THIS THAT JEZABEL, as if to say, Has fortune thus changing its course cast down Jezabel from the height of glory into the depths of ignominy? She was the beauty and comeliness of the world: now she rots like filthy dung. She was the wife and mother of kings, nay the mistress and ruler: behold now she is torn by dogs. She was the terror of Elias and the prophets, nay of all Israel: see now she is trampled under the hooves of horses. St. Chrysostom notes, hom. 25 in epistle to the Romans, that Jezabel was punished more severely than Achab, who fell honorably in battle pierced by an arrow, because Jezabel was the occasion of all his evil, nay the suggester and instigator: "Jezabel, he says, suffered greater punishments than Achab the robber of the vineyard: for she herself had woven this whole affair, and had given the king occasion for his fall." Thus Blessed Francis Borgia, lately Duke of Gandia, when he carried the body of Isabella wife of Charles V deceased to the royal sepulcher in Granada, saw it so deformed, foul and horrible, that he did not recognize it, nor dared swear that this was the body of the Empress. Wherefore beholding it with fixed eyes and marveling: "Is this, he said, Isabella the Empress of the world?" Is this the wise and holy Isabella the joy of Spain, the glory of the empire, the hope of the world? Where is that recent beauty of her face, where the splendor of her eyes, where the majesty of the royal crown? Has her flesh thus been turned to putrefaction, beauty to stench, splendor to horror? Wherefore God illuminating his mind, considering attentively how great was the vanity of kings and kingdoms and all the goods of the world, he determined to bid them farewell, and to serve God alone, and entering the Society of Jesus, he gave a rare example of all virtues, both to religious and to seculars, nay even to princes and kings, as is evident from his Life.
