HEDHER. - Hebrew word (plur. ḥadharim), which originally means "room"; it later came to mean, especially among the Jews of Eastern Europe, the elementary school where children enter at four or five years of age.

The instruction imparted there consists in the reading of Hebrew for the purpose of the correct recitation of prayers, in the translation of the Pentateuch and of Rashi's commentary done word by word mechanically, without any grammatical notion. Alfredo Ravenna
