HEDHER. – Hebrew word (plur. ḥadharim), originally meaning “room”; it later came to mean, especially among the Jews of Eastern Europe, the elementary school that children enter at the age of four or five.
The instruction given there consists of reading Hebrew for the purpose of correctly reciting the prayers, and translating the Pentateuch and Rashi’s commentary word for word mechanically, without any knowledge of grammar.
