CASTIGLIONI, VITTORIO. — Jewish scholar and Jewish educator, b. in Trieste on 25 March 1840 and d. in Rome on 1 August 1911. He first taught mathematics and pedagogy at the Trieste secondary school; then, from 1905 until his death, he was chief rabbi of Rome. His principal work is the Italian translation of the Mišnah, the publication of which, continued by E. Schreiber, is not yet complete. He also wrote delicate Hebrew sonnets (Nizmē zāhābh, Frankfurt a. M. 1907); he published ancient Hebrew inscriptions and works on education (Semper recte, Florence 1897). He was among the first to work for the establishment in Italy of Froebelian kindergartens.
