CASTIGLIONI, VITTORIO. - Jewish Hebraist and educationist, b. in Trieste on 25 March 1840 and d. in Rome on 1 August 1911. He first taught mathematics and pedagogy at the lyceum of Trieste, then from 1905 until his death he was chief rabbi of Rome. His principal work is the Italian translation of the Mishnah, whose publication, continued by E. Schreiber, is not yet complete. He also wrote delicate Hebrew sonnets (Nizmē zāhābh, Frankfurt am Main 1907); he published ancient Hebrew inscriptions and pedagogical works (Semper recte, Florence 1897).
