CASTIGLIONI, Vittorio. — Jewish scholar and educator, born in Trieste on 25 March 1840, died in Rome on 1 August 1911. He first taught mathematics and pedagogy at the liceo in Trieste, then from 1905 until his death served as Chief Rabbi of Rome. His principal work is the Italian translation of the Mishnah, the publication of which, continued by E. Schreiber, remains unfinished. He also wrote delicate Hebrew sonnets (Nizmê zâhâbh, Frankfurt am Main 1907) and published ancient Hebrew inscriptions and pedagogical works (Semper recte, Florence 1897). Among the first in Italy, he advocated the establishment of kindergartens of Froebelian type.
