HELWICUS, TEUTONICUS. - Dominican ascetical writer, who lived around 1300.

From the catalogue of Stams (Mon. O. P. hist., XVIII [Rome 1936], p. 65, cf. 124) H. is known as the author of the treatise De mandato maximo, that is De dilectione Dei et proximi, whose manuscripts are noted by Grabmann (v. bibliography, pp. 577-80) and which from 1480 down to our own century was placed among the spurious works in the editions of St. Thomas. The treatise follows substantially Thomistic doctrine; the author is a profound preacher of Eckhartian tendencies. Egenter gives an exposition of it in his studies on the friendship of God. Grabmann leans toward identifying Helvicus Teutonicus with Helvicus "junior" of the nobles of Germar near Mühlhausen in Thuringia.

The catalogue of Stams also attributes to Helvicus Teutonicus a Liber exemplorum, which was by many confused with the Liber de exemplis of Giovanni (v.) of San Gimignano (v. Archiv. Fratrum Praedicatorum, 9 [1939], pp. 157-61).
