HUBNER, EMIL. - Philologist and archaeologist, b. in Düsseldorf in 1834, d. in Berlin in 1901. He devoted himself to studies in Latin archaeology and epigraphy.
To him are owed the following epigraphic publications: Epigraphische Reiseberichte aus Spanien und Portugal (Berlin 1861); Inscriptions Hispaniae (2 vols. of the CIL, 1869); Inscriptions Hispaniae Christianae (ibid. 1871; volume now superseded and corrected by Vives); Inscriptions Britanniae Christianae (ibid. 1873); Exempla scripturae epigraphicae Latinae (ibid. 1885); the volume Römische Epigraphik (2nd ed., Munich 1892).
His other works include: Die antiken Bildwerke in Madrid (Berlin 1862); Arqueologia de España (Barcelona 1888); Monumenta linguae Hibericae (Berlin 1893); and Römische Herrschaft in Westeuropa (ibid. 1890). He was editor of the journals Hermes and the Archäologische Zeitung.
