HÜBNER, EMIL. - Philologist and archaeologist, b. in Düsseldorf in 1834, d. in Berlin in 1901. He devoted himself to studies of Latin archaeology and epigraphy.
The following epigraphic publications are due to him: Epigraphische Reiseberichte aus Spanien und Portugal (Berlin 1861); Inscriptiones Hispaniae (2 vols. of the CIL, ibid. 1869); Inscriptiones Hispaniae Christianae (ibid. 1871; a volume now superseded and corrected by Vives); Inscriptiones Britanniae Christianae (ibid. 1873); Exempla scripturae epigraphicae Latinae (ibid. 1885); the volume Römische Epigraphik (2nd ed., Munich 1892).
His other works include: Die antiken Bildwerke in Madrid (Berlin 1862); Arqueologia de España (Barcelona 1888); Monumenta linguae Hibericae (Berlin 1893); and Römische Herrschaft in Westeuropa (ibid. 1890). He was editor of the periodicals Hermes and the Archäologische Zeitung.
