HUÁNUCO, DIocese of. - Diocese and capital city of the homonymous province in Peru (South America).

The diocese covers an area of 60,000 sq. km., with 465,818 inhabitants, all Catholic, distributed across 33 parishes served by 27 diocesan priests and 14 regular clergy, a seminary, 3 male religious communities, and 7 female religious communities (1949).

The diocese was established by Pius IX on March 17, 1865, by separating it from the archdiocese of Lima, of which it is a suffragan. The first bishop was Manuel Teodoro del Valle.
