HUÁNUCO, DIOCESE of. — Diocese and capital city of the province of the same name in Peru (South America).
The diocese has an area of 60,000 sq. km, with 406,818 inhabitants, all Catholics, distributed among 33 parishes served by 27 diocesan priests and 14 religious priests, 1 seminary, 3 male and 7 female religious communities (1949).
The diocese was created by Pius IX on 17 March 1865 through the division of the archdiocese of Lima, of which it is a suffragan. The first bishop was Manuel Teodoro del Valle.
