HUGO, GUSTAV. - Jurist, b. at Lörrach (Baden) on 23 Nov. 1764, d. at Göttingen on 15 Sept. 1844.
From 1788 he was a professor at Göttingen and must be considered the founder of the so-called historical school of law, of which Savigny was to be the principal exponent; a school which, in opposition to the natural-law theorists, maintained that the principle of evolution is discernible also in the field of the history of law, and which regarded the latter as a manifestation of the popular consciousness.
Among H.'s principal works are to be remembered the Institutionen des heutigen römischen Rechts (Berlin 1789), the Lehrbuch eines zivilistischen Kursus (7 vols., ibid. 1792-1821), the Zivilistisches Magazin (6 vols., ibid. 1790-1837) and, finally, the Beiträge zur zivilistischen Bücherkenntnis der letzten 40 Jahre (3 vols., ibid. 1828-44).
