GOFFREDO da TRANI. - Canonist, born in Trani, died probably in April 1245. He taught civil law in Naples and canon law in Bologna. He then became auditor litterarum contradictarum and was created cardinal deacon in 1244.
He is the author of Glossae in Decretales Gregorii IX and of Quaestiones; but his major work is the Summa super rubricis Decretalium (composed in the years 1241–43), which acquired very great authority and was widely disseminated through numerous editions (the first is from Basel 1487, the last from Padua 1667).
