HUMBOLDT, FRIEDRICH HEINRICH ALEXANDER von. - Naturalist and geographer, b. in Berlin on 14 Sept. 1769, d. there on 6 May 1859. The knowledge acquired through his long travels in Central America and Central Asia allowed him to give a notable impulse to the progress of the various branches of the natural sciences, of biogeography, of physical geography and of economics. Author of a Cosmos, a physical description of the universe, with historical, bibliographical notes, etc. With K. Ritter, H. is considered the founder of modern geography. Although held to be irreligious by some biographers, he seems to have had a clear belief in God, especially in the last years of his life.
