HUMBOLDT, FRANÇOIS. - Theologian and preacher of the Order of Minims, b. at Verdun in 1569, d. at Tours on 29 Oct. 1612. He became a religious at Lyon at the age of 24, already a doctor in law, philosophy, mathematics, medicine and theology. Ordained a priest, he was assigned to preaching. Clement VIII summoned him to be part of a company of 8 missionaries, to combat Calvinism directly.
A fluent and brilliant orator, he traveled through the principal cities of France. He sustained disputes with the most fervent Calvinists, whom he always managed to confute, and sometimes to convert. Within the Order he held the office of provincial (of Tours, of Lyon, and of Provence), of visitor and procurator general (1602-1605). Venerated as a saint, he had the honor of being buried in the same tomb as St. Francis of Paola.
His important work: Phantasma coense ministralis (Padua 1612), which is a confutation of the Calvinist errors concerning the Eucharist.
