GUICHARD, SIMON. - Theologian and preacher of the Order of Minims, b. at Estampes near Paris around 1500, d. at Aix in Provence in 1574. Already a priest and having obtained his academic degrees at the Sorbonne, he entered the Minims in Paris. Of great piety and learning, he was several times provincial of Gascony, then assistant general (1535-38) and finally superior general (1547-49).
Much esteemed for his learning, he took part in the Council of Trent under Paul III. Having returned to France, he devoted himself to preaching, combating the Calvinist heresy with such ardor that he was called "hammer of the heretics and athlete of the Catholic Church." He brought about many conversions; but he also drew upon himself the hatred of the heretics, by whom, through the infliction of grave wounds, his death was caused. Considered a martyr of the Catholic faith, his name is included, with a fine eulogy, in the Indice dei santi di Lione, in which city Guichard had preached a great deal and founded a convent of his Order. He labored with great zeal to introduce the Society of Jesus into France.
