JEHU. - Prophet, son of Hanani, who carried out his prophetic activity in the kingdom of Israel at the time of King Baasha (910-887 B.C.), whom he reproached for his misdeeds and for his defection from the legitimate cult of Yahweh after the example of his predecessor Jeroboam I (v.), and foretold the ruin of his house.
According to the Vulgate (I Kings 16:7), this prophet would have been killed by King Baasha himself; this is an error: in the Hebrew text, it is not Baasha who kills I., but I. who reproaches Baasha for the cruel extermination of the family of Jeroboam. In fact we find him again some thirty years later, when he reproaches the king of Judah Jehoshaphat (v.) for having formed a friendship and a family alliance with the impious king Ahab (II Chron. 19:2 ff.). He survived King Jehoshaphat himself and wrote the memoirs of his reign (II Chron. 20:34).
