JUJUY, DIOCESE of. — Diocese and capital city of the province of the same name in Argentina.
The diocese has an area of 56,551 sq. km. and 166,943 inhabitants, of whom 166,710 are Catholics; it has 17 parishes, 24 diocesan priests and 10 religious priests, one seminary, 2 male and 5 female religious communities (Ann. Pont. 1951, p. 225).
The diocese was created by Pope Pius XI by the apostolic constitution Nobilis Argentinae nationis of 20 April 1934, as a suffragan of the archdiocese of Salta; the church of the Most Holy Savior was raised to the rank of cathedral.
