MENDOZA, DIOCESE of. — Diocese and principal city in the province of the same name in Argentina.
It has an area of 247,917 sq. km. and a population of 676,149 inhabitants, of whom 608,535 are Catholics. It has 43 parishes with 61 diocesan priests and 80 regular priests, one seminary, 21 male and 32 female religious communities (Ann. pont., 1951, p. 268).
The diocese was created by Pope Pius XI by the apostolic constitution Nobilis Argentinae nationis of 20 April 1934, through the division of the diocese of S. Giovanni di Cuyo; the episcopal see was established in M., and the church dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto was made the cathedral. It is suffragan to S. Giovanni di Cuyo (AAS, 27 [1935], pp. 257–63).
