LAMPREDI, URBANO. - Scholar, b. in Firenze on 13 Feb. 1761, Piarist in 1778, d. in Napoli on 23 Feb. 1838. An eminent Hellenist, a poet rivalling Monti and the men of letters of his time, he also distinguished himself in philosophy and in the mathematical and physical sciences.
He held teaching posts with honour in various colleges of the Order; but during the Napoleonic upheavals he allowed himself to be carried along by the innovating current, also undertaking long journeys through several nations. His translation of several Greek authors, especially of the Odyssey and a good part of the Iliad, was admired by scholars. Noteworthy were the critical articles he wrote for the Poligrafo, of which L. was one of the principal editors, as were also his literary polemics.
