LASALDE, CARLOS. - Piarist, polymath, b. at Portillo (Spain) on 4 Nov. 1841, d. there on 4 Sept. 1906. One of the first Spaniards to write on grammatical studies according to the principles of modern philology; he was also highly proficient in Greek and Latin.
As rector of the College of Yecla, he carried out notable scholarly activity, as the printed publications attest. He founded in Madrid the Revista Calasancia, which he directed for seven years. He also contributed to other periodicals, and himself published works of a religious, pedagogical, and historical character, some of which were printed in Germany. Among his historical works, foremost is his Historia literaria de las Escuelas Pías de España (3 vols., I Madrid 1893; II and III posthumous).
