LASALDE, CARLOS. - Piarist, polygraph, b. at Portillo (Spain) on 4 Nov. 1841, d. there on 4 Sept. 1906. One of the first Spaniards who wrote on grammatical studies according to the laws of modern philology; he was also highly skilled in Greek and Latin.
As rector of the College of Yecla, he carried on a remarkable scientific activity, as the printed publications bear witness. He founded in Madrid the Revista Calasancia, which he directed for seven years. He also collaborated with other periodicals, and he himself brought to light works of a religious, pedagogical and historical character, some of which were printed in Germany. Among works of a historical character, his Historia literaria de las Escuelas Pías de España stands out (3 vols., I Madrid 1893; II and III posthumous).
