LLANAS, EDUARDO. - Piarist, b. at Binéfar (Spain) on 13 Oct. 1843, d. at Saragossa on 14 July 1904. He began his activity as an apologist and polemicist on the island of Cuba, with his numerous writings in Revista cattolica, with which he fought spiritualism, Freemasonry and the schisms.
A forceful sacred orator and lecturer, his Lenten sermons in the cathedral of Barcelona and the theological-scientific lectures on biblical subjects held in that same city and later put into print remained famous (Origen del hombre, Barcelona 1880; Origines religiosas, ibid. 1882; Sobre el orden sobrenatural, ibid. 1887; Los seis días de la creación, ibid. 1889; Universalidad del diluvio, ibid. 1882, etc.).
He collaborated assiduously in several Catholic and scientific periodicals and was also the founder of the review La Academia Calasancia, which he directed from 1891 to 1900, inserting in it many apologetic and polemical articles.
The Spanish episcopate repeatedly honored him with its blessings, and although some of his writings (e.g., El liberalismo es pecado?, Barcelona 1888) did not please some, he could always say that whoever is with God and with His Vicar on earth is not separated from the Gospel. He was the first rector of the College of Villanueva y Geltrú and from 1900 until his death, vicar general of the Piarist Schools of Spain. He published 4 vols. entitled Escolapios insignes (Barcelona 1899-1900).
