**LINCOLN, Diocese of.** – A city and diocese in the State of Nebraska (U.S.A.), comprising the part of the State of Nebraska situated south of the Platte River.

It extends over 23,844 square miles, with 426,147 inhabitants, of whom 39,695 are Catholics. It has 141 parishes and 15 chapels, 155 diocesan priests and 21 religious priests, one seminary, 3 male religious communities and 17 female, 9 parochial high schools; in 1949 there were 269 conversions. The diocese was erected by Leo XIII on 2 August 1887; its first bishop was Mgr. T. Bonacum (1887–1911); he was succeeded by Mgr. J. H. Thien (1911–17), Mgr. C. J. O’Reilly (1918–23), J. L. Beckman (1924–30); L. B. Kucera, the present bishop, on 30 June 1930. The diocese is a suffragan of Omaha; the Cathedral is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
