LONDON, Diocese of. – City and diocese in the province of Ontario (Canada). Erected as a diocese by Pius IX with the brief *De Salute Dominici gregis* of 21 Feb. 1855, by separation from the diocese of Toronto (Ontario). Its see was transferred from London to Sandwich on 2 Feb. 1859 and then from Sandwich back to London on 3 Oct. 1869.
It comprises a Catholic population of 129,879 souls distributed in 97 parishes, with 169 diocesan priests and 82 religious (Cappuccini, Congregation of St. Basil, Pii M. A. C. 1895, pp. 475-44; *The Ontario Year Book and Directory*, Toronto 1950, see index).
