KINGSTON, ARCHDIOCESE OF. - City and archdiocese in the province of Ontario (Canada). Erected as a diocese on 27 Jan. 1826, by dismemberment of the archdiocese of Québec, elevated to an archdiocese on 28 Dec. 1889. The ecclesiastical province comprises, besides the metropolitan see, the dioceses of Peterborough, Alexandria and Sault-Sainte-Marie (all in Ontario).
Catholics number 82,000 over an area of 10,000 sq. km. with a total population of 239,167. There are
46 parishes, 68 churches, 13 convents, 5 hospitals or asylums, 47 Catholic schools, 2 colleges for boys and two for girls. The clergy is composed of 63 diocesan priests and 27 religious (Jesuits and Redemptorists). Regiopolis College in K. holds a university charter and is directed by the Jesuits; St Mary's College in Brockville prepares aspirants to the religious life in the Congregation of the Redemptorists.
