KINGSTON, ARCHDIOCESE of. - City and archdiocese in the province of Ontario (Canada). Erected as a diocese on 27 Jan. 1826, by dismemberment of the archdiocese of Québec, it was raised to an archdiocese on 28 Dec. 1889. The ecclesiastical province comprises, besides the metropolitan see, the dioceses of Peterborough, Alexandria, and Sault-Sainte-Marie (all in Ontario).

There are 82,000 Catholics in an area of 10,000 sq. km., with a total population of 239,167. There are

46 parishes, 68 churches, 13 convents, 5 hospitals or orphanages, 47 Catholic schools, 2 boys’ colleges and two girls’ colleges. Regiopolis College in K. possesses a university charter and is directed by the Jesuits; St Mary’s College in Brockville prepares candidates for religious life in the Congregation of the Redemptorists.
