LUBIENSKI, BERNARDO. - Redemptorist, b. near Warsaw on 9 Dec. 1846, d. there on 10 Sept. 1933. A descendant of a noble family, he spent his youth in England. Having entered the Redemptorists and been ordained a priest, he worked for some time as a missionary in England, and, having returned to Poland in 1882, he founded at Mosciska the first house of his Congregation. Celebrated for his great oratorical qualities, he soon became one of the best-known missionaries and preachers. Because of the many hardships and sacrifices, at the age of 39 he was struck by partial paralysis of the legs, but this did not prevent him from continuing to preach missions everywhere for another 40 years, contributing effectively to the revival of religious life in Poland. He died in the reputation of sanctity, surrounded by an almost legendary halo because of his missionary preaching.
