FRANCESCO MARUCELLI. — Florentine scholar and bibliophile, born on 11 March 1625, died in Rome on 26 July 1703. From the age of twenty-three he lived in Rome, where he devoted himself especially to collecting books. He was favoured by Pope Clement XI. He compiled a vast universal bibliographical repertory by subject (about 6,000) under the title *Mare magnum*, preserved in manuscript, with the additions of his nephew Monsignor Alessandro Marucelli (in all 111 volumes), in the Marucelliana Library of Florence, founded by the latter «public, especially for the benefit of the poor».
