HOLSTE (HOLSTENIUS), LUKAS. - Geographer and scholar, b. in Hamburg on 27 Sept. 1596, d. in Rome on 2 Feb. 1661. He studied at Leiden under Johannes Meursius; he traveled in Denmark and England; in Paris he converted to Catholicism on 15 Dec. 1624. In 1627 he moved to Rome, summoned there by Cardinal Francesco Barberini, whose librarian he became in 1636. In 1641 he was appointed custodian of the Vatican Library. He left his private collection of printed works to the Angelica Library in Rome; his manuscripts to others.

His various offices and his boundless erudition did not allow H. to carry out any of the grandiose projects he planned, chief among them a collection of Geographi graeci minores. Published posthumously were his Annotationes to Philip Cluverius's Italia antiqua (Rome 1666), and various patristic editions. He began the study for the reworking of the 40 geographical paintings of the Vatican Gallery. Of his many surveys in central and southern Italy, notebooks of notes survive.
