MASSARELLI, ANGELO. - Bishop, b. at Sanseverino-Marche in 1510, d. at Rome on 17 July 1566.
Having earned a degree in both laws, he entered the service of cardinals and in particular that of Agostino Trivulzio; he followed Girolamo Aleandro as secretary on his legations, when the latter was created cardinal in 1538. After Aleandro's death he held the same office with Card. Marcello Cervino, and when the latter was sent as legate to the Council of Trent, he was first provisionally secretary of the Council, and he continued in this office until the closing of the Council itself, to everyone's satisfaction, for his ability and impartiality. Meanwhile Paul IV, who had him at his court, appointed him bishop of Telese on 15 Dec. 1557. There remain by him, besides the letters he wrote, the seven Diaria sacra Oecumenici Concilii Tridentini, a reliable record of the events from 22 Feb. 1545 to 30 Nov. 1561.
