MASSARELLI, ANGELO. - Bishop, b. at Sanseverino-Marche in 1510, d. at Rome on 17 July 1566.
Having taken degrees in both laws, he served cardinals, especially Agostino Trivulzio; he accompanied Girolamo Aleandro as secretary on his legations, when the latter was created cardinal in 1538. After Aleandro’s death, he held the same office with Card. Marcello Cervino, and when the latter was sent as legate to the Council of Trent, he was first provisionally secretary of the Council, and continued in this office until the close of the Council itself, to the satisfaction of all because of his ability and impartiality. Meanwhile Paul IV, who had him at his court, appointed him bishop of Telese on 15 Dec. 1557. Besides the letters he wrote, there remain by him the seven Diaria sacra Oecumenici Concilii Tridentini, a reliable record of events from 22 Feb. 1545 to 30 Nov. 1561.
