in the direction of the musical chapel of the church of St. Francis in Bologna. Upon Martini’s death, he succeeded him in teaching counterpoint and fugue at the Philharmonic Lyceum of Bologna, which at the time was the foremost school in Italy.
Mattei composed much music, especially sacred works, marked by the restrained style of his teacher: correct and traditional, but somewhat measured and academic. Teaching occupied almost entirely his activity, and from his highly regarded and well-attended school emerged illustrious musicians, including Giovanni Pacini, Gioacchino Rossini—who retained a grateful and vivid memory of him—and Gaetano Donizetti. Worthy of note is the publication *Pratica di accompagnamento musicale sopra i bassi numerati* (Bologna 1825–30), which was reprinted several times thereafter.
