MATTEI, STANISLAO. - Of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, musician, b. in Bologna on 10 February 1750, d. there on 12 May 1825. A pupil of Fr. G. B. Martini, in August 1770, still a deacon, he was appointed coadjutor of his teacher (with right of succession)

in the direction of the musical chapel of the church of St. Francis in Bologna. On his death he succeeded him in the teaching of counterpoint and fugue at the Musical Lyceum of the Bolognese Philharmonics, "the best school that Italy boasted in those times."

M. composed much music, especially ecclesiastical, modeled on the master's restrained style: correct and traditional, but somewhat stilted and academic. Teaching absorbed almost entirely M.'s activity, and from his school, much esteemed and frequented, came illustrious musicians, among them Giovanni Pacini, Gioacchino Rossini, who kept a grateful and vivid memory of him, and Gaetano Donizetti. Worthy of consideration is the publication Pratica di accompagnamento musicale sopra i bassi numerati (Bologna 1825-30), several times reprinted thereafter.
