MECHITAR KŇNETZI. – Armenian Catholicos (1341–55), famous for the clarifications he offered in refutation of the celebrated Libellus of the Latinizing Armenians, Nersès Balionz and Simeone Beg, bishop, presented to Benedict XII, and containing 117 errors attributed to the Armenian Church. M., in deference to the Pope’s desire, at the Council of Sis (1344–45), synodally refuted each charge, demonstrating the orthodoxy of the Armenian Church. The acts of this Council, in the form of synodal responses, are today a valuable source for knowledge of important ritual, disciplinary, and dogmatic questions of the period.
