MECHITAR KṆNETZI. - Armenian Katholikos (1341-55), famous for the clarifications he offered in refutation of the famous Libellus of the Latinizing Armenians, Nerses Balionz and Simeon Beg bishop, presented to Benedict XII, and containing 117 errors reproached against the Armenian Church. M., in compliance with the Pope's wish, at the Council of Sis (1344-45), refuted synodally each head of accusation, demonstrating the orthodoxy of the Armenian Church. The acts of this Council, in the form of synodal replies, are today a precious source for the knowledge of important ritual, disciplinary and dogmatic questions of the time.
