MINIME DELL'ADDOLORATA. - On May 1, 1868, the servant of God Clelia Barbieri and two companions of hers, under the direction of the parish priest Fr. Gaetano Guidi, began a common life at the Budrie (diocese of Bologna), devoting themselves to the education of children and the visiting of the sick.

Barely three years later the pious foundress died; but the Institute founded by her continued to live and develop. Approved by the archbishop of Bologna first on trial (1879) and then definitively (1905), it had its Constitutions approved by the same archbishop on Sept. 26, 1926, and received the decree of praise and the first approval of the Holy See on March 20, 1934. The definitive approval is dated Jan. 24, 1949.

The sisters devote themselves to the Christian and civil education of children in nurseries, schools, orphanages, and boarding schools, to catechetical teaching in the parishes, and to the care and service of the sick in hospitals and at home. In 1947 the professed sisters numbered 249 and the novices 19, distributed among 32 houses.
