MISSIONARY HANDMAIDS OF THE MOST SACRED HEART. - The Institute was founded in 1890 in Baltimore (Maryland, U.S.A.), when, with the approval of the archbishop Cardinal Gibbons, some pious women, animated by supernatural zeal, began to live in common, in order to devote themselves to the social and religious assistance of Black women under the direction of the Josephite Fathers, who were dedicated to the same mission.

The sisters were first called Missionaries, Daughters of the Holy Spirit, then Missionary Auxiliaries of the Most Sacred Heart, and since 1941 they bear their present title.

The Institute received the decree of praise on 21 Dec. 1941 with the temporary approval of the constitutions, which were definitively approved on 11 July 1949.

In 1947 the professed sisters numbered 183, the novices 27 and the postulants 19, distributed among 19 houses.
