MUKACHEVO (MUNKÁCS), DIOCESE OF. - Ruthenian-Greek (Catholic), located in Hungary, which passed in 1920 to Czechoslovakia and in 1945 to Soviet Russia. The first known bishop is John (1491). The bishopric was suppressed by the schismatics

(in the Turkish period) and then had, from 1689 onward, apostolic vicars. In 1771 it was restored as a suffragan of Erlau (Agria) and passed, in 1776, under Strigonia. From 1775 the see is at Ungvár, in Czech Užhorod. The diocese was restricted to the so-called Subcarpathia, with a population almost entirely Ruthenian (Ukrainian). For Latin Catholics there is an apostolic administration. After the union with Czechoslovakia, the Orthodox Ruthenians also erected a diocese at Munkács.

The diocese counted, in 1944, 461,000 faithful, 354 priests, 281 parishes, 459 churches and chapels, 31 schools, 8 monasteries with 85 religious. The arrival of the Russians in that year brought the diocese the most merciless persecution. The bishop Msgr. Theodore Romža died a martyr of the faith on 1 November 1947. In 1949 the diocese was officially "liquidated" by the Bolsheviks.
