MUCAČEVO (MUNKÁCS), DIOCESE of. - Ruthenian-Greek (Catholic), located in Hungary, passing in 1920 to Czechoslovakia and in 1945 to Soviet Russia. The first known bishop is Giovanni (1491). The bishopric was suppressed by the schismatics
(under Turkish rule) and has had, since 1689, apostolic vicars. In 1771 it was restored as a suffragan of Erlau (Eger) and in 1776 passed under Strigonia (Esztergom). Since 1775 the see has been at Ungvár, in Czech Užhorod. The diocese was restricted to so-called Subcarpathia, whose population is almost entirely Ruthenian (Ukrainian). For Catholics of the Latin rite, an apostolic administration exists. Following the union with Czechoslovakia, the Ruthenian Orthodox also established a diocese at Munkács.
In 1944, the diocese had 461,000 faithful, 354 priests, 281 parishes, 459 churches and chapels, 31 schools, and 8 monasteries with 85 religious. The arrival of the Russians in that year brought the most ruthless persecution to the diocese. Bishop Msgr. Teodoro Romža died a martyr for the faith on Nov. 1, 1947. In 1949 the diocese was officially "liquidated" by the Bolsheviks.
