PELESZ, JULIAN. - Bishop, b. in the Lemko region (Carpathians) in 1843 and d. at Przemysl in 1896. He pursued his studies at the Ukrainian Seminary of St. Barbara in Vienna.

A priest from 1867, he was from 1874 to 1883 rector of the Seminary and parish priest of the Ukrainians residing in the city. During this time he wrote in German the fundamental two-volume work on the History of the "Union of the Ruthenian Church with Rome" and in Ukrainian a solid book of moral theology.

In 1885 he was elected first bishop of the new see of Stanislavov in Galicia and in 1891 of Przemysl. He took part in the Synod of Lviv (1891), very important for the development of the Ruthenian rite in Galicia. P. had much to suffer because of political and religious difficulties, both in Galicia and in Vienna, as well as on the part of the Congregation of Propaganda, then much inclined to Latinism.
