NICOLAUS HERMANNI (Nils Hermansson), Saint. - Swedish, b. at Skäninge in 1326, d. at Linköping on 2 May 1391; he studied at Paris and at Orléans where he became a doctor utriusque iuris. He was a canon, then (1374) bishop of Linköping.
He was a counsellor of St. Bridget and tutor of her children; father of the poor and the oppressed, a firm supporter of the Church against the kings Magnus, Håkan and Albert, a defender of ecclesiastical celibacy, a poet and liturgist. He worked for the canonization of St. Bridget and received her body when it was transported from Rome to Vadstena. There is no confirmation of his canonization by John XXIII.
A paraphrase of the Moralia Gregorii, some Revelationes Birgittae, and the Birgittae officium, a collection of hymns dedicated to various saints and to Bridget herself, are attributed to him (among the latter the very beautiful Rosa rorans bonitatem, stella stillans claritatem, Birgitta, vas gratiae! Rora coeli pietatem, stilla vitae puritatem, in vallem miseriae).
