Over an area of 290,360 sq. km., it has a population of 1,284,668 inhabitants, of whom 394,621 are Catholic. It comprises 37 parishes, served by 13 diocesan priests and 100 religious, and 3 seminaries.

The diocese was erected by Pope Pius XII with the apostolic constitution Solemnibus conventionibus of 4 Sept. 1940, raising the parish church of N. L., dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, to the dignity of a cathedral and making it a suffragan of Luanda.
