Nyassa Settentrionale, Apostolic Prefecture of

NORTHERN NYASSA, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE OF. — In British East Africa, entrusted to the Society of the White Fathers.

It was erected on 8 May 1947 with territory detached from the Apostolic Vicariate of N. It comprises the entire northern part of Nyasaland north of the Dwangwa River.

It has an area of 20,000 sq. km., with approximately 360,000 inhabitants, of whom 4,330 are Catholics, with 18 churches and 20 chapels served by 15 religious priests, assisted by 16 sisters; it also has 13 elementary schools, 1 middle school, 8 vocational schools, and 2 teacher-training schools. A preparatory seminary. Catholic Action is flourishing there.
